In my previous post I discussed how economic factors have influenced why solar matters to me and my family. Today I will outline how solar supports my desire for energy independence. NM is uniquely positioned to be a clean-energy leader in the United States. We have an abundance of open space that could be utilized to take advantage of our ideal solar climate. Despite this, solar is a very small part of PNM's energy portfolio because they are a monopolistic corporation that seeks out the cheapest options (i.e. coal) to maximize profit. PNM is the largest energy producer in New Mexico with a market capitalization of $3.28 billion. The top five executives are expected to have earned $8.66 million for 2016 with the CEO receiving $4.118 million alone. Those astronomical compensation rates are supported by the seemingly-endless rate hikes that we as consumers have been subjected to over the years as well as questionable billing practices paid for by tax payers for work done for the City of Albuquerque.
